The idea of building a modern art museum has raised over 50 years ago. the reason was the lack of an institution to collect the great artworks from the twentieth century artists, so the authorities decided to provide space and exhibit the artworks from the most famous contemporary artists. Eventually, after years of effort and planning, in 1979, the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art was officially opened for public visit.
The architecture of the museum's building is based on two fundamental principles of Iranian identity and the modern technology of world architecture. Hence, "Kamran Diba" took charge of designing and building the museum, inspired by the native architecture of Iran, using the most up-to-date materials. The nativity and modernity were so interconnected in the museum structure that David Galloway, the first museum director of TMoCA, described it as "a bridge to West from the East."

The museum building consists of two sections, a set of labyrinths and a central yard. Inside the building, a spiral path with a downward slope is designed to guide the visitor to other parts of the museum. The labyrinth consists of seven main galleria.
The first gallery "The Gallery No. 1 ", is the main building, which connects to the next gallery leading the visitors down without through a spiral path. Other than gallery NO.1 and gallery NO.5 which are the main axis of the museum's building and have different structures the other galleries have roughly identical designs. Each gallery is connected to the next gallery with a soft and pleasant gradient that is built in perfect harmony with the structure.

Four tremendous windcathers over the central labyrinth, reminding the architecture of Iranian desert houses, Iranian vestibule (arctic entry), quadrangle, and passageway all of which are features of traditional Iranian architecture, are attributed in this magnificent building. The building has an area of 8500 square meters with surrounding gardens. The garden itself is part of the Tehran Laleh Park which is enclosed and you can look at the sculptures inside it as you cross the Kargar Street. Interesting sculptures that give you glad tidings of approaching to one of the finest modern art galleries in the world.
Since the Museum of Contemporary Art is a great gallery, its drawings are replaced periodically so that more artists can display their artworks in this museum. So if you visit the museum once in a while, you will see new artworks. But almost every year, the famous treasure of the TMoCA which includes paintings by the most famous contemporary painters from the world are displayed.
